| In Iran, almost a century of dependence on oil, nationalization of all aspects of commerce and now the recent unrest, have hampered any meaningful discussion about building a manufacturing backbone and developing the technology and innovation that we need to expand Iranian exports beyond oil, pistachios & rugs. Iran’s economy can only grow if it embraces privatization, transitions towards a free market economy, and invests in entrepreneurial innovation. But for now, Iran is dependent on oil and politics, a toxic combination that cannot sustain a nation for much longer. Iranian entrepreneurs are the heart & soul of Iran and like others like them around the world, they can change the direction of their country. When we first started the Iranian Trade Association in 1997 with the help of Fortune 100 US companies, we worked to promote US-Iranian economic engagement & lobby against US unilateral sanctions. Sometimes multilateral sanctions make sense but often, unilateral sanctions only diminish the private sector opportunities that directly impact the people of Iran. Further, over the past decade, dozens Iranian-American nonprofit organizations have emerged as advocates for Iranian-American civil rights, grassroots empowerment and political growth such as the National Iranian American Council (www.Niacouncil.org), the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (www.PAAIA.org) and dozens of local and state Democratic, Republication and professional organizations across the US. We still support a constructive and mutually beneficial US economic engagement policy with Iran but we also want to support the fragile Iranian private sector...our only hope for the future. That’s where we see our new niche!
