Iranians who live away from their homeland, have mostly managed to succeed in life and to attain noteworthy positions: in trade, professions, even in politics in some countries…. One activity so far neglected is the formation of associations to protect their commercial interests as well as the interests of their motherland. But this has begun to take shape: one good example being ITA, in San Diego, California, USA:
The Iranian Trade Association (ITA) is a business group based in the US that supports US-Iranian trade development. ITA has three basic areas of operation. First, ITA provides trade information to companies. Second, ITA produces Iranian business conferences with key speakers. And third, ITA leads a lobbying effort to lift the US trade sanctions on Iran.

Since 1997, ITA has been active all over the US with events and seminars on Iranian business opportunities and with a series of policy conferences in Washington, DC. Several members of the US Congress that support ending the trade sanctions on Iran have presented at ITA events in Washington, DC and Houston, Texas. ITA members include top US companies like Conoco, Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, BHP, Caterpillar, lawyers, import-exporters, and smaller companies interested in Iran. ITA is also interested in assisting Iranian companies with market development and importing regulations in the US as well as attracting foreign investment and capitol to Iran for manufacturing and job creation. ITA has an internationally recognized web site at www.lranianTrade.org where companies from around the world can add their names to the free Trade Board on line, get up to date information and news on Iranian business opportunities, and stay informed on the latest policy changes between the US and Iran.

Recently, there was a partial lifting of the US sanctions on the export of US agricultural and medical goods and the import of Iranian carpets and dried foods. There is still a 300% tariff on the import of Iranian pistachios and some US carpet buyers are even concerned about the current quality of Iranian carpets. US trade with Iran is subject to heavy regulations by the Office of Foreign Assets Control and a special license for dealing with Iran. However, ITA is working with officials to lift as many trade barriers as possible so Iranian companies can better compete in the US market and US companies can directly invest in Iran. The founder and president of ITA is Shahriar Afshar, an Iranian American committed to ending the US trade sanctions and creating new business opportunities between the US and Iran. Mr. Afshar is regularly interviewed by the world press on Iranian business and economic issues and US-Iranian relations. Mr. Afshar also speaks at major Iranian professional and business conferences from California to the Great Britain. ITA welcomes the memberships of Iranian, foreign, US companies.
