Call for Papers ----------------- Eighth International Conference on Central Asia & the Caucasus " Lessons from the Past, Prospects for the Future " June 11-12, 2000

Nearly a decade has passed since the independence of the countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus. During this period, momentous events and major transformations have occurred in the region¨s social, economic, military, and political life. Consequently, some research centers have focused on such concepts as social development and the shaping of new regional identities, while others have turned their attention to issues in the changing security environment, or have concentrated on the process of nation building along with the current ethnic conflicts and crises.

Today many scholars view the Caspian Sea as the future economic lifeline of the region. The various cooperative-competitive issues engulfing the sensitive Caspian Basin range from the exploitation of the sea and under the sea-bed resources, to the problems involved in oil and gas transit routes, connection links with world markets, to the region¨s critical security and environmental issues.

Recognizing the importance of the study and analysis of the above-mentioned issues, and pursuant to its previous programs, the Institute for Political and International Studies intends to convene the 8th International Conference on Central Asia & the Caucasus. This conference, entitled "Lessons from the Past, Prospects for the Future," will be held on June 11-12, 2000 in Tehran to examine the following topics:

* Analysis of changes in the political and economic structures of the region

* Regional economic challenges and the creative role of regional cooperation

* "Dialogue of civilizations," as a means of promoting mutual understanding

* Energy resources, its transport and impact on the Caspian Sea environment

* The effects of globalization on the region

* The role of transit routes in the development of regional cooperation

* Analysis of regional security plans during the past decade
