Biography of Cabinet Ministers of Islamic Republic of Iran

Ali Abdolalizadh, Minister of for Housing and Urban Development Ali Abdolalizadeh , born in Orumiyeh , capital of west Azarbaijan in 1954 , received his BS in civil engineering from Tabriz University and his M,A, in state management in 1995. He is currently working on his Ph.D. degree in state management. He served as deputy mayor of Orumiyeh and deputy governor general if east Azarbaijan until 1984. Abdolalizadeh then served as majlis deputy representing Orumiyeh at the second and third terms of the majlis ( 1984-1982 ) . He was a member of the plan and budget commission of the majlis during both terms , and the commission rapporteur in the third majlis. Abdolalizadeh has been governor general of east Azarbaijan province since 1992 .

Gholamreza Aghazadeh, Vice-President and Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization ( IAEO) Former oil minister , Gholamreza Aghazadeh has been appointed vice president of Iran as well as head of the country's Atomic Energy Organization ( IAEO) .Aghazadeh , 48 years old , Aghazadeh is also member of Iran's Expediency Council , an advisory body of senior political and religious figures which mediates any disputes between parliament and the Guardian Council, a supervisory body of 12 clergymen and lawyers responsible for protecting the Islamic constitution.

Mohammad Reza Aref , Minister for Telecommunication Mohammad Reza Aref was born in 1941 in Yazed . He spent his adolescent years in Yazd and in 1959 came in first place at the National Math Competition . A year later , in 1960 , he entered Tehran University where he received a B,S, degree in electrical engineering. throughout his schooling he was politically active and supported the movement started by the late Imam Khomeini until he was arrested by 'Savak' ( The Shah's secret police ) in 1963. A scholarship granted by Isfahan Technical university enabled him to start his post-graduate studies in U.S. In 1966 he received his MS degree in telecommunications and later in 1970 he completed the Ph.D. program at the Stanford University . During his stay in US He was member of the Muslim students organization and was the head of the same organization for a period of one year . Before the victory of the 1979 revolution . Aref has accompanied the late Imam Khomeini to Paris . Since the victory of the Islamic revolution . Aref has held a variety of government posts including deputy minister of telecommunications, deputy minister of culture and higher education in charge of student's affairs and advisor to minister of culture and higher education . Aref has been the head of Tehran University since November 1994.

Habibollah Bitaraf , Minister for Energy Habibollah Bitaraf , was born in the central city if Yazd in 1956 . He received his high school diploma in Yazd and then entered Tehran University where he earned an MS In civil engineering . Bitaraf, a political activist before the victory of the 1979 Islamic revolution , took up an administrative post in the construction Jihad organization following the establishment of the Islamic Republic . After serving as the governor general of Yazd province for 4 years . Bitaraf took up the post of deputy energy minister for training during 1990-1994 . He also taught at several universities in Tehran during the same period. While in the ministry of energy, Bitaraf was in charge of several dam construction projects and Karoun 3 and 4 power plants .

Mrs. Massoumeh Ebtekar , vice-president in charge of Iran's Environment Protection Organization Massoumeh Ebtekar, 36 , is a former journalist , holds a doctorate in Immunology , and she is a University professor . She used to serve on the editorial board of Kayhan International, an Iranian newspaper , and the acting head of the central committee of Iran's non-governmental women's organization. She represented Iran at the World Women's Conference in Nairobi and Beijing. She is fluent in English and French. Married with two sons. Mrs. Ebtekar spent her first years of studies in the United States.

Mohammad Farhadi , Minister for Health Born in Shahroud ( Semnan province ) in 1949 , Mohammad Farhadi started his higher education in the field of medicine at Mashhad University in 1968 . Farhadi got his doctorate degree in the field of medicine from the University in 1975 and specialized in the field of ear , nose and throat in the same University in 1980 . He completed his post-graduate studies in laser operation, Endoscopic surgeries and cochlea transplantation both inside and outside the country . Since 1982 , Farhadi has assumed several posts such as acting head of the red crescent society (RCS) , secretary of Iran's medical education council , culture an higher education minister , chancellor of Tehran university and head of Iran's institute for promotion of science and research . He also cooperated with supreme council for cultural revolution in drawing up curriculum for specialized and post-specialized medical training courses, identifying and attracting medical experts to Iranian universities . He also contributed to the setting up of important centers such as the genetic , polymer and medical engineering research center , "Payame-Nour' university and other high education centers . He is now a professor at Mashhad university, director and a member of the medical disciplinary panel, secretary of the board of trustees at 'Shahed' university , member of Iran's medical training council.

Morteza Haji , Minister of Cooperatives Morteza Haji was born in 1948, in Tehran . Prior to a teaching career in city of Babol in Mazandaran province ., Haji attended the teachers training university in Tehran and received a BS degree in mathematics . While a student , Haji founded the association of followers of Islam in western part of Tehran before being arrested by 'Savak', the toppled Shah's secret police , for his membership in the 'Party of the Islamic Nations .' Haji played an active role in the 1979 revolution by joining the resistance groups in the northern province of Mazandaran . He was appointed as the head of Babol city council and deputy chief of the Islamic revolution's guard corps before becoming Mazandaran province's governor general for six years . He was then appointed as deputy minister of culture and Islamic guidance in pilgrimage and tourism affairs and later deputy commerce minister . Since 1995 he has been the managing director and deputy managing editor of the morning daily ' Hamshahri'.

Mohammad Hashemi, Vice president in charge of executive affairs Brother of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani , Mohammad Hashemi is an influential voice in Iran's moderate circles . Mahmoud Hojjati , Minister for Transport Mahmoud Hojjati was born in the city of Najafabad in central province of Isfahan in 1955. His activity in the Muslim students association led to his dismissal from the university . He was later re-admitted to the university following the victory of the 1979 , he was appointed as the administrator of the construction Jihad in Chahar Mahal -Bakhtiyari province. Later on in 1985 he became a member of the central committee of the construction Jihad . While being active in the sacred defense, Hojjati also played an active role preparing the construction Jihad's five-year plan . Between 1989 and 1994 he served as governor general of Sistan and Baluchestan province before being assigned the administrative responsibilities of the giant 'Kakheh' dam . 15 of Hojjati's family members were martyred during the revolution , according to a government official in Sistan and Baluchestan province .

Eshaq Jahangiri , Minister for Mines and Metals Eshaq Jahangiri was born in a religious family in the city of Sirjan , in the southeastern province of Kerman in 1957 . He has an MS in industrial management from Sharif industrial university . Prior to the Islamic revolution in Iran , Jahangiri was an active member of political and revolutionary groups . He was shot and wounded in an encounter with the forces of toppled Shah . After the Islamic revolution he became head of Jiroft construction Jihad organization for two years as well as a member of construction Jihad council of Kerman province .Jahangiri represented Jiroft constituency in the second and third terms of Majlis . Jahangiri has been governor general of the central province of Isfahan since 1992.

Issa Kalantari , Minister for Agriculture Issa Kalantari was born in marand , west Azarbaijan province in 1952 He completed his high school years in his hometown and later in Tehran . He got a BS in Agriculture from Orumiyeh university , and later his Ph.D. From Iowa state university in US. In 1981 he was appointed as head of the National industries organization and in the following year he continued his service as head of the organization for promotion of Agriculture . He was later given the post of deputy minister of Agriculture for research and training and head of the seed and sapling research institute . From 1985 to 1988 he served as head of the gardening , cultivation and plant improvement department at the Tarbiat Modarres university and at the same time as managing director of Agriculture . He is also the chairman of the world food council affiliated to the United Nation .

Hussein Kamali, Minister of Labor Hussein Kamali , born in Doroud , Lorestan province m in 1953 . He received his technical and vocational training in his hometown and then attended the Tehran university where he received an MA in political science . While a university student , Kamali became involved with the center for Islamic publication and research and 'The dawn of Islam ' organization where he began his political activities against the toppled Shah's regime. He was an advocate of workers' rights and welfare . With the triumph of the 1979 Islamic revolution, Kamali was appointed the head of the revolutionary council in charge of labor affairs . He was responsible for the 'Muslim workers' weekly , the first publication of its kind in 1980. He was elected to the first Islamic consultative assembly as Tehran's representative where he also served as the spokesman for Majlis labor commission . Later in the third Majlis he became the chairman of the labor commission . He served as the minister of labor during the first term of ex-president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani .

Kamal Kharazi, Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Kharazi was born in 1944 in Tehran and received a BA in Persian language and literature from Tehran university in 1969. Two years later, he got his MA in education from the same university. he has a Ph.D. degree in the same subject from Houston University .During 1972-79, he was an active member of Muslim students, association in the US And Canada as well as in the Islamic research institute in London. During 1978-1980, he served in different capacities including deputy for planning of Islamic Republic of Iran broadcasting (IRIB), deputy foreign ministry for political affairs and managing director of the center for intellectual development of children and young adults. From 1980 to the end of the 8-year Iraqi imposed war, Kharazi was appointed as a member of supreme defense council as well as head of the war communication headquarters. He was managing director of Islamic Republic news agency(IRNA) from 1980 to 1989. He has been appointed as Iran's permanent representative and ambassador to the UN Since 1989. Kharazi has published several essays and books on psychology and education. He is married and has two sons .

Ataollah Mohajerani, Minister for Culture and Islamic Guidance Ataollah Mohajerani, the nominee for the ministry of culture and Islamic guidance, was born in the central city of Arak in 1954. He received a BA In history from Isfahan University in 1977, and an MA in Iranian history and culture from Shiraz University in 1983 and later a Ph.D. from 'Tarbiat Modarres' university. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Dushanbe university in Tajikistan three years ago. Mohajerani has a knowledge of English, Arabic and Urdu languages. He has published several essays and books on cultural and religious subjects. Mohajerani was elected as majlis deputy in the first term of majlis in 1980. He was a member of Majlis presiding board, head of the trade commission, deputy head of the commission for foreign affairs and head of news and information committee affiliated to the war defense commission of Majlis. In 1984 he was appointed as Iran's cultural attaché to Pakistan. From 1985 to 1989 he served as deputy prime minister for legal and majlis affairs. Mohajerani has served as the vice president in charge of legal and parliamentary affairs since 1989. He was appointed as a member of policy making council of the Islamic Republic of Iran broadcasting (IRIB) By the leader of the Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 1992. He has also been deputy head of the center for strategic studies since 1994 and head of the committee for supporting the Islamic revolution of Palestine since 1990. In addition to serving in several academic and cultural centers, Mohajerani is currently a faculty member of 'Tarbiat Modarres' (instructor training) university in Tehran.

Mostafa Moein, Minister for Higher Education Mostafa Moein was born in 1951 in Najafabad, Isfahan Province. In 1976 he got his Ph.D. in medicine from Shiraz University and later in 1979 he specialized in children's diseases and finally in 1996 he completed his Postdoctoral in allergy and immunology. During his career he worked as the chancellor of Shiraz University. Then he was elected as MP from Shiraz in the first term of the Majlis and since 1983 he has been a member of the Supreme Cultural Revolution Council. In 1988 - 1989 he was an MP from Tehran in the third term of the Majlis and later he became the minister of culture and higher education. Since 1997 he has been the MP from Isfahan in the fifth term of the Majlis.

Hussein Mozafar , Minister for Education Hussein Mozafar was born in Tehran in 1952. He received his BA in Islamic Jurisprudence and fundamentals of Islamic law and MA In management. He served as a high school teacher for 26 years and is currently deputy head of cooperatives of 'Shahid' (Martyrs) foundation and serves as its liaison officer with Majlis. Following the victory of the 1979 Islamic revolution, Mozafar was appointed the head of Varamin's education office and later took over the education offices in districts 6, 7 and 16 of city of Tehran. He became director general of the Tehran province's education office in 1982. In 1986, he was given the post of director general of the inspection and evaluation department of the ministry of education.

Hojjatulislam Abdul Vahed Mousavi Lari; Minister of Interior

Mir-Hussein Mussavi , Top Advisor to the President Mussavi led the government from 1981 to 1989, for most of the period when the country was at war with neighboring Iraq. He opted for centralized economy and shifted the country away from the West and toward the socialist bloc aligned with the former Soviet Union. Mussavi, 56, left office in 1989 after a constitutional amendment dropping the post of prime minister to create a stronger president. He then practically retreated from political life, serving only nominally in certain posts. But his name resurfaced ahead of the presidential election in May, when he was raised as a potential candidate by the radicals to challenge the rival conservatives. But he refused to stand, prompting his supporters to turn to Khatami, who won the election with a landslide. Mussavi is an Architect by profession.

Hossein Namazi, Minister for Economy Hossein Namazi was born in Shiraz, Fars province, in 1944 and is currently a faculty member of Tehran's Martyr Beheshti University. He also holds the post of deputy chancellor of the University in charge of research. Namazi got his BA, MA And Ph.D. in economy from an Austrian University during the years 1964 through 1974. He served as a faculty member and chancellor of Al-Zahra University in Tehran during 1974 to 1981. Subsequently he was appointed as the economy and finance minister. in 1989. Namazi was appointed as deputy head of the strategic research center in charge of economic affairs, a post he held until 1992. Among his most important accomplishments are the compilation of regulations on interest-free banking system, taxes, balancing of the government budget in the post-revolution era, and laws governing insurance companies.

Hojjatolislam Mohammad Ali Sadoughi; Vice President, Parliamentary and Legal Affairs

Mohammad Saidi Kya, Minister for Construction Jihad Mohammad Saidi Kya was born in 1946 in the central city of Isfahan. He received his MS In civil engineering from Tehran University in Science and industry. Saidi Kya worked as a civil engineer before the victory of the 1979 Islamic revolution and in 1980 was appointed as head of road and transportation office in the southern province of Hormuzgan. In 1981 he became the deputy transportation minister in charge of provincial affairs and in 1982 was given the responsibility for construction of Bafgh-Bandar Abbas railway. He later became the head Iran's railway renovation office before being appointed as the minister of road and transportation, in 1993. He has also served as the deputy head for 'Bonyad-E Mostazafan and Janbazan' and a member of its board of directors. Saeidi kya has also been the head of the railway engineering department of the University of Science and industry.

Gholamreza Shafei, Minister for Industry Gholamreza Shafei , was born 1941 in marand, east Azarbaijan province. During his studies at Sharif Industrial University, he was an active member of the Muslim students association for which he was arrested, convicted and imprisoned. After graduation and before entering military service, he worked in a steel mill. After the victory of the Islamic revolution, he began work for the Islamic revolution committee as deputy commander of Martyr Ayatollah Mohammad Mofateh, in district four of Tehran. After Ayatollah Mofateh's Martyrdom, Shafei took over the committee's supervision until 1981. In the same year, Shafei became director general of Iran national industries organization and deputy minister of industries. He also held the position of deputy minister of mines and metals. He was appointed minister of industries for a period of 5 years after which he took up the position of deputy head of production affairs for the planning and budget organization. Shafei served as minister of cooperatives during both terms of the ex-president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani Shafei is currently also the founding member and head of board of directors of 'Fajr' garment company.

Ali Shamkhani, Minister for Defense Ali Shamkhani, was born in the city of Ahvaz, Khuzestan province in 1955. He holds a BS Degree in Agricultural engineering from the University of Ahvaz, an MS Degree in military affairs and an MA In state management from the University of state management organization. Shamkhani currently serves as the commander of the Naval forces of the army, the Islamic revolution's guard corps (IRGC), as well as commander of Khatam Ul-Anbia Naval headquarters in the Persian Gulf. Fighting the counterrevolutionary forces in Khuzestan, Kurdestan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Gilan, and Mazandaran have been among Shamkhani's many undertakings after the victory of the 1979 Islamic revolution. Mohammad Shariatmadar, Minister for Commerce Born in Tehran in 1957, Mohammad Shariatmadar after completing his primary and secondary education got a higher diploma in the field of electronics from Tehran's technical and electronics training center. Shariatmadar is now studying politics at the graduate level in Tehran University. After the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979, he became a member of the Islamic revolution central committee and later he served as deputy chief of the prime minister's office in charge of information and research, deputy intelligence minister and acting commerce minister. Since 1991, Shariatmadar has been a member of the leader's representative office for Hajj affairs.

Hojatoleslam Mohammad Esmaeil Shoushtari, Minister for Justice Hojatoleslam Mohammad Esmaeil Shoushtari was born in a religious family in city of Qouchan in Khorasan province in 1949. Before completing his high school education, Shoushtari started his formal religious education in seminary schools in holy cities of Mashhad, Qom and Najaf. He was also active in the pre-revolution political movements. His various responsibilities following the 1979 Islamic revolution have been as follows:

Hojatoleslam Ali Younesi; Minister of Intelligence

Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, Minister of Oil Bijan Namdar Zanganeh was born in the western city of Kermanshah in 1953. He spent his early school years in his hometown before moving to Tehran where he received his high school diploma. He received his MS In civil engineering from Tehran University in 1977. Following the victory of the 1979 Islamic revolution, Zanganeh became a faculty member of the 'Khajeh Nasireddin' University. He was appointed as deputy minister of culture and Islamic guidance in Martyr Rajaie's government. Immediately after formation of the construction Jihad ministry in 1983 he headed the ministry. Namdar Zanganeh was appointed as minister of energy in government of Mir- Hussein Musavi in 1988. Namdar Zanganeh also served as energy minister in president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani's cabinet. He was appointed as a member of the national expediency council by the leader of the Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in 1996. He is currently teaching in several Universities and Academic centers. Zanganeh is married and has three children.
